High above the ancient rainforest floor, the West Coast Treetop Walkway offers a rare chance to wander through the canopy of a temperate rainforest, 20 metres up among rimu and kamahi trees. This gentle, wheelchair-accessible boardwalk winds for 450 metres, culminating in a 47-metre-high observation tower that reveals sweeping views of the rugged West Coast landscape – from the Tasman Sea to the Southern Alps. It’s a serene, sensory experience: the scent of damp moss, the chorus of native birds, and the dappled light filtering through the leaves.
Highlights & What to See
- Canopy Walkway: Stroll among the treetops on a stable, sway-free structure that brings you eye-to-eye with centuries-old trees and epiphytic ferns.
- Observation Tower: Climb the spiral ramp to the top for panoramic views over the forest, the Ōkārito Lagoon, and, on clear days, Aoraki/Mount Cook.
- Interpretive Panels: Learn about the unique ecology of the West Coast rainforest, including the role of the iconic pounamu (greenstone) in Māori culture.
- Birdwatching: Listen for the bell-like call of the tūī, the chime of the korimako (bellbird), and the distinctive squawk of the kākā.
- Night Walks: If you’re staying nearby, book a guided twilight tour to spot glowworms and nocturnal wildlife in the canopy.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allow 1 to 1.5 hours for a relaxed visit, including the walkway and tower. It’s a perfect short stop on a road trip between Franz Josef and Hokitika, or a lovely morning or afternoon activity if you’re based in the area. The walkway is open daily, and the lighting is best in the late afternoon for photography.
