Lake Matheson, a mirror-still glacial lake near Fox Glacier, offers one of New Zealand's most iconic reflections: the snow-capped peaks of Aoraki/Mount Cook and Mount Tasman shimmering on its dark, tannin-stained waters. The short walk through ancient rimu and kahikatea forest to the lake's edge feels like stepping into a postcard, with the silence broken only by native birdsong. Sunrise and sunset are magical, when the mountains glow pink and the lake turns glassy — though even on a breezy day, the setting is spellbinding.
Highlights & What to See
- Jetty Viewpoint – The classic, postcard-perfect reflection of Aoraki/Mount Cook and Mount Tasman, best captured in calm, early morning light.
- Lake Matheson Walk – A gentle 2.6 km loop (1.5 hours) circling the lake through lush rainforest, with several viewing platforms offering different angles of the mountains and reflections.
- Reflection Island – A small boardwalk platform jutting into the lake, providing an unobstructed view of the mirrored peaks — ideal for photographers.
- View of the Southern Alps – On clear days, the entire alpine spine from Cook to Tasman is reflected, creating a breathtaking panorama.
- Native Birdlife – Spot kererū (wood pigeon), fantails, and bellbirds flitting through the forest, and perhaps a shy weka near the car park.
- Matheson Café – A cosy spot near the trailhead serving excellent coffee, homemade pies, and cakes with a view of the lake — a perfect reward after the walk.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allow 1.5 to 2 hours for the full loop walk and photo stops. Early morning (before 9am) is best for calm reflections and fewer crowds; sunset is also stunning but can be busier. If you're a keen photographer, plan to spend an extra 30–45 minutes at the Jetty Viewpoint waiting for the perfect light. The café is worth lingering at for a coffee break, adding another 30 minutes.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining

- Lake Gault – A lesser-known, equally reflective lake with a longer 3-hour loop walk through forest and wetlands, offering solitude and similar mountain views.
- Franz Josef Glacier – 25 km north, this glacier is more accessible than Fox, with a short walk to the terminal face and popular heli-hike tours.
- Okarito Lagoon – A tranquil coastal lagoon 30 km north, perfect for kayaking, birdwatching (including the rare white heron/kōtuku), and the Okarito Trig walking track.
