Milford Sound is the crown jewel of Fiordland National Park, a dramatic fiord carved by glaciers and often described as the 'eighth wonder of the world'. Rainforest-clad cliffs plunge into dark, mirror-like waters, while waterfalls like Stirling and Bowen cascade hundreds of metres. Seals, dolphins, and rare Fiordland crested penguins patrol the fiord. The journey here via the Homer Tunnel is almost as spectacular as the destination itself.
Highlights & What to See
- Cruise the fiord – a boat tour is the classic way to experience sheer cliffs, waterfalls, and wildlife; choose a small-craft or kayak tour for a quieter perspective.
- Milford Track – New Zealand's most famous multi-day hike, but even day walkers can tackle the first section to Giant Gate Falls.
- Stirling Falls – one of the fiord's permanent waterfalls, often with rainbows in its mist.
- Bowen Falls – the tallest waterfall in Milford Sound, cascading 162 metres.
- Milford Sound Lookout – a short walk from the car park offers a panoramic view of the fiord's entrance.
- Wildlife spotting – keep an eye out for New Zealand fur seals basking on rocks, bottlenose dolphins, and the rare Fiordland crested penguin.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend a half-day on a cruise (1.5–2 hours) plus travel time from Te Anau (2 hours each way). To truly soak it in, consider an overnight cruise or stay at Milford Sound Lodge. If you're doing the Milford Track, budget 4 days for the full walk. For a day trip from Queenstown, allow 12–14 hours round trip.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Doubtful Sound – larger and more remote than Milford, with a wilder feel; accessible via a cruise and coach from Manapouri.
- Te Anau – the gateway town for Fiordland, with Lake Te Anau, glowworm caves, and the Kepler Track.
- Milford Track – New Zealand's Great Walk, a 53-km trek through pristine wilderness from Glade Wharf to Sandfly Point.
