Milford Sound is the crown jewel of Fiordland National Park, a dramatic fiord carved by glaciers and often described as the 'eighth wonder of the world'. Rainforest-clad cliffs plunge into dark, mirror-like waters, while waterfalls like Stirling and Bowen cascade hundreds of metres. Seals, dolphins, and rare Fiordland crested penguins patrol the fiord. The journey here via the Homer Tunnel is almost as spectacular as the destination itself.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most visitors spend a half-day on a cruise (1.5–2 hours) plus travel time from Te Anau (2 hours each way). To truly soak it in, consider an overnight cruise or stay at Milford Sound Lodge. If you're doing the Milford Track, budget 4 days for the full walk. For a day trip from Queenstown, allow 12–14 hours round trip.
