About New Zealand Public Holidays
New Zealand has 11 national public holidays each year, observed by all employees regardless of what day of the week they fall on. When a holiday falls on a Saturday or Sunday, it is Mondayised — shifted to the following Monday (or Tuesday if Monday is already a holiday) so workers receive a day off in lieu.
In addition to national holidays, each of New Zealand's 12 regions observes a regional anniversary day — a local public holiday tied to the anniversary of the founding of that province. These dates vary by region and are typically observed on the Monday nearest to the actual anniversary date.
Matariki, added in 2022, is New Zealand's newest public holiday and the world's first public holiday based on an indigenous celestial calendar. Its date varies each year and is determined by the Matariki Advisory Committee under the Te Kahui o Matariki Public Holiday Act 2022.
