Whataroa is a tiny, tranquil settlement on the West Coast of New Zealand's South Island, best known as the gateway to the Okarito Kiwi Sanctuary and a prime spot for experiencing the wild, untamed beauty of the region. This is where the mountains meet the sea, with lush rainforest, glacier-fed rivers, and a coastline that feels utterly remote. The town itself is modest, but its surroundings are extraordinary – think ancient kahikatea swamp forests, rare white herons (kotuku), and the chance to see kiwi in the wild. It's a place for those who crave solitude and authentic nature encounters, far from the crowds.
Highlights & What to See
- Okarito Kiwi Sanctuary: Join a guided night walk to spot the rare rowi (Okarito brown kiwi) in its natural habitat – a magical, once-in-a-lifetime experience.
- White Heron Sanctuary Tour: Take a boat tour to the Waitangiroto Nature Reserve to see the only nesting colony of kotuku (white herons) in New Zealand, active from September to January.
- Okarito Lagoon: Kayak or paddleboard on this serene, unspoiled lagoon, the largest unmodified wetland in New Zealand, teeming with birdlife.
- Whataroa Swamp Forest: Walk the short Kahikatea Loop Track through a primeval forest of towering kahikatea trees, some over 800 years old.
- Franz Josef Glacier: A short drive south, this famous glacier offers stunning valley walks and heli-hikes – a dramatic contrast to the coastal wetlands.
Suggested Time to Spend
Whataroa itself is a brief stop – half a day is enough to explore the swamp forest and soak in the atmosphere. However, to fully appreciate the area's unique wildlife, plan for at least one full day and one night. This allows you to take the white heron tour (morning departures) and join an evening kiwi-spotting walk. If you're combining with Franz Josef or Fox Glacier, two nights in the area gives you a relaxed pace to enjoy both the coast and the glaciers.
