Hokitika

Hokitika is a ruggedly charming West Coast town where the Tasman Sea crashes against wild beaches and the Southern Alps loom inland. Once a rowdy gold-rush port, today it's a laid-back hub for greenstone (pounamu) carving, craft breweries, and dramatic coastal walks. The town's quirky character shines through its driftwood sculptures, historic buildings, and the annual Wildfoods Festival.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

One full day is enough for the main sights – morning at the Gorge, afternoon exploring town and kiwi centre, then glow worms at dusk. If you're cycling or hiking, add a second day to tackle part of the Wilderness Trail or relax at the beach.
