Westland Tai Poutini National Park is a wild, untamed slice of New Zealand's South Island West Coast, where ancient glaciers carve through temperate rainforest and crash into coastal lagoons. This UNESCO World Heritage site offers some of the most accessible glacier hiking in the world, alongside dramatic alpine scenery and pristine wilderness that feels a world away from civilisation.
Highlights & What to See
- Franz Josef Glacier & Fox Glacier – Walk right up to the terminal faces of these dynamic glaciers or take a heli-hike onto the ice for an unforgettable experience. The valleys are flanked by towering cliffs and waterfalls.
- Lake Matheson – Famous for its mirror-like reflections of Aoraki Mount Cook and Mount Tasman, especially at dawn. The easy loop track winds through native forest and over a historic swingbridge.
- Okarito Lagoon – New Zealand's largest unmodified wetland, home to the rare kotuku (white heron). Kayak or take a boat tour to spot birdlife against a backdrop of snowy peaks.
- Copland Track to Welcome Flat Hut – A challenging multi-day tramp through podocarp forest to natural hot pools. Soak in the steaming pools while surrounded by alpine scenery.
- Gillespies Beach – A wild, windswept beach with remnants of gold-mining history. Seal colonies and dramatic sunsets make it a memorable stop.
Suggested Time to Spend
Give the park at least two to three days to truly appreciate its highlights. With one day you can visit both Franz Josef and Fox glaciers and Lake Matheson, but adding a heli-hike or a kayak trip on Okarito Lagoon requires extra time. For trampers, the Copland Track demands three days round-trip. Most visitors base themselves in Franz Josef or Fox Glacier villages, which are small but well-equipped with accommodation and dining.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Hokitika – A charming coastal town known for its pounamu (greenstone) workshops and vibrant arts scene. The Hokitika Gorge’s turquoise water is a must-see.
- Whataroa – Gateway to the Okarito white heron sanctuary and a good spot for jetboat tours on the Whataroa River.
- Haast Pass – A scenic drive through beech forest and past waterfalls, connecting to Wanaka and Central Otago. Perfect for a road trip loop.
- Punakaiki & the Pancake Rocks – About two hours north, these limestone formations and blowholes are a classic West Coast stop.
