Gillespies Beach is a wild, untamed stretch of coastline on the West Coast of New Zealand's South Island, where the Tasman Sea pounds against dark sand and driftwood-strewn shores. It's a place of raw beauty, offering a stark contrast to the nearby glaciers and rainforests. The drive from Fox Glacier township winds through lush native bush before opening onto this remote beach, where you can walk for miles with only the sound of crashing waves and seabirds for company. The beach is also rich in gold-mining history, with remnants of old dredges and a cemetery telling stories of the area's pioneering past.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most visitors spend 1–2 hours at Gillespies Beach, which is enough to soak in the scenery, explore the historic sites, and walk a portion of the sand. If you're a keen photographer or want to hike the longer track, you could easily spend half a day here. Combine the visit with a morning or afternoon at Fox Glacier for a full day of West Coast highlights.
