Lake Matheson

Lake Matheson, a mirror-still kettle lake just a short drive from Fox Glacier village, is famous for its flawless reflections of Aoraki/Mount Cook and Mount Tasman. On a calm morning, the surface becomes an almost perfect mirror, creating one of New Zealand's most photographed scenes. The easy loop walk through ancient rimu and kahikatea forest offers multiple viewing platforms, each framing the peaks differently.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Allow 1.5–2 hours for the full loop walk, including time to linger at the viewing platforms. For photographers, plan to arrive 30–45 minutes before sunrise or sunset. If you're short on time, you can just walk to the first jetty and back in about 30 minutes, but the full loop is well worth the effort.
