Franz Josef Glacier is one of New Zealand's most accessible glaciers, plunging from the Southern Alps down into temperate rainforest near the Tasman Sea. The tiny township of Franz Josef is the base for heli-hikes, ice climbing, and guided walks that take you onto the ancient ice. Even from the valley floor, the sight of this river of ice grinding through lush green bush is unforgettable.
Highlights & What to See
- Heli-Hike on the Glacier – A scenic helicopter flight lands you on the ice, followed by a guided walk through crevasses and ice tunnels.
- Terminal Face Walk – A 1.5-hour return walk from the car park to the glacier's terminal face, offering dramatic views of the ice front and waterfalls.
- Sentinel Rock Walk – A short, steep climb to a viewpoint overlooking the glacier and valley.
- Glacier Hot Pools – Soak in natural hot pools surrounded by rainforest, perfect after a day on the ice.
- West Coast Wildlife Centre – See rare kiwi birds and learn about the region's unique ecology.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend a full day in Franz Josef. A half-day heli-hike takes about 4 hours, leaving time for the terminal face walk and hot pools. If you're combining with Fox Glacier, plan 2 nights in the area to do both glaciers justice. The weather can change quickly, so allow flexibility in your itinerary.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Fox Glacier – Just 23 km south, offering a slightly quieter glacier experience with similar activities.
- Lake Matheson – Famous for mirror reflections of Mount Cook and Mount Tasman, a short drive from Fox Glacier.
- Okarito Lagoon – A coastal wetland with kayaking and birdwatching, including white herons (kotuku).
- Whataroa – Small town with the only white heron breeding colony in New Zealand (seasonal tours).
- Hokitika – A historic gold-rush town with pounamu (greenstone) galleries and the Hokitika Gorge.
