Fox Glacier Township is the laid-back base camp for one of New Zealand's most accessible glaciers. Tucked between the Tasman Sea and the Southern Alps, this tiny settlement (population under 300) buzzes with hikers, heli-hikers, and glacier enthusiasts. The air smells of rainforest and ice, and the main street – a single strip of cafes, gear shops, and lodges – feels like the start of an adventure. With the glacier's terminal face just 5 km away, you're never far from ancient ice.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most visitors spend 1–2 nights. A full day lets you do a glacier hike (half-day) and explore Lake Matheson and Gillespies Beach. If you're short on time, a morning glacier walk and afternoon at the lake still feels satisfying. For heli-hikes, book the first flight to avoid afternoon clouds.
