Fox Glacier Township

Fox Glacier Township is the laid-back base camp for one of New Zealand's most accessible glaciers. Tucked between the Tasman Sea and the Southern Alps, this tiny settlement (population under 300) buzzes with hikers, heli-hikers, and glacier enthusiasts. The air smells of rainforest and ice, and the main street – a single strip of cafes, gear shops, and lodges – feels like the start of an adventure. With the glacier's terminal face just 5 km away, you're never far from ancient ice.

• Fox Glacier – Walk to the terminal face viewpoint (20 min return) or take a heli-hike onto the ice. The blue crevasses and ice caves are surreal.
