Arthur's Pass National Park is a rugged alpine wilderness straddling the Southern Alps, where ancient beech forests cling to steep valleys and snow-capped peaks pierce the sky. The park is a sanctuary for kea, the world's only alpine parrot, and offers some of New Zealand's most dramatic mountain scenery. The legendary Arthur's Pass road (SH73) weaves through the park, providing access to short walks and epic tramping tracks. Whether you're a day-tripper or a multi-day hiker, this is a place to feel the raw power of the mountains.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most visitors spend a full day exploring the park's short walks and viewpoints along the highway. For a deeper experience, plan 2–3 days to tackle a multi-day tramp, such as the Goat Pass or Mingha/Deception route. If you're driving from Christchurch to the West Coast, a stopover of at least a few hours is essential – break your journey at Arthur's Pass Village to stretch your legs on a waterfall walk or a ridge hike.
