Roaring Billy Falls is one of those classic West Coast roadside stops that punches well above its weight. A short, easy stroll through dense native bush leads you to a wide, thundering curtain of water cascading over a rock face into a clear pool. The spray catches the light, and on a sunny day you’re almost guaranteed a rainbow. It’s a quick immersion into the raw power and beauty of the Haast region.
Highlights & What to See
- The waterfall itself: A 30-metre cascade that lives up to its name – the roar is impressive, especially after rain.
- Native forest walk: The 20-minute return trail winds through lush podocarp forest with ferns and mosses. Keep an eye out for native birds like the fantail and bellbird.
- Swimming hole: On a warm day, the pool at the base is inviting (but be aware the water is chilly and currents can be strong).
- Photography spot: The viewing platform offers a perfect angle for capturing the falls in full flow, with the forest framing the scene.
Suggested Time to Spend
Budget about 30–45 minutes for the walk and time to soak in the scenery. It’s an ideal quick stop to stretch your legs between longer drives along the Haast Pass or to the glaciers. If you’re in no rush, linger for a picnic by the river.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Haast Pass Lookout: A short drive away, offering panoramic views of the Southern Alps.
- Fantail Falls: Another easy-access waterfall just up the road, with a lovely pebble beach.
- Thunder Creek Falls: A more powerful cascade with a longer walk through ancient forest.
- Haast Beach: Wild, windswept coastline with driftwood-strewn sands – a contrast to the rainforest.
- Jackson Bay: The end of the road, with a tiny fishing settlement and great fish and chips.
