Step into a world where ancient podocarps tower overhead and the air hums with the sound of waterfalls and birdcall. The Haast Rainforest, part of the vast Te Wahipounamu World Heritage Area, is one of New Zealand's most pristine and untamed temperate rainforests. This is a place of wild beauty—where moss-draped trees, ferns, and crystal-clear rivers create a landscape that feels straight out of a prehistoric era. Driving the Haast Highway, you'll be surrounded by this lush wilderness, with countless opportunities to stop and explore short walks that lead to thundering waterfalls and serene forest groves.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Plan for a full day to truly soak in the Haast Rainforest. Most visitors are passing through on the Haast Highway between Wanaka or Queenstown and the West Coast, so allow at least 4–6 hours to stop at the main waterfalls and viewpoints. If you have more time, overnighting in Haast township lets you explore further afield, including the remote beaches and longer walks. A half-day is enough for a quick taste, but you'll want to linger.
