Thunder Creek Falls is a powerful 28-metre waterfall plunging into a deep pool in the heart of Mount Aspiring National Park. The roar of the water lives up to its name, and the short walk to the viewing platform is a perfect leg-stretcher on the drive along the Haast Pass Highway. Surrounded by dense native beech forest and mossy rocks, this is a classic West Coast roadside stop that packs a dramatic punch.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Allow 20–30 minutes for the walk and photos. It's an ideal quick stop to break up the drive between Wanaka and Haast – you can easily fit it in without rushing. If you're feeling adventurous, linger longer to explore the forest or enjoy a picnic by the creek.
