Hidden in the lush rainforest of the Haast River valley, the Blue Pools offer a dazzling display of nature’s clarity. The short, easy walk through moss-draped beech forest leads you to a series of deep, impossibly blue pools fed by glacial meltwater. On a sunny day, the water glows with an almost electric turquoise hue, revealing large trout gliding over the river stones below. A swing bridge across the Makarora River adds a touch of adventure, and the whole experience feels like stumbling upon a secret paradise.
Highlights & What to See
- The Pools Themselves: Peer into the crystal-clear water – on calm days you’ll see rainbow trout and native longfin eels. The colour is at its most vivid in late morning when sunlight hits the water.
- Swing Bridges: Cross two suspension bridges that bounce gently underfoot, offering bird’s-eye views of the turquoise water and the surrounding native forest.
- Short Nature Walk: The 1.5 km (return) track is flat and well-maintained, making it accessible for most fitness levels and families with children.
- Haast River Lookout: A few minutes’ drive beyond the car park, a viewpoint overlooks the braided Haast River against a backdrop of snow-capped peaks.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allow 45 minutes to 1 hour for the walk and time to soak in the scenery. It’s a perfect quick stop on a Haast Pass drive – you can easily fit it in between Wanaka and the West Coast. Arrive early or late in the day to avoid crowds and enjoy the pools in peace.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Haast Pass / Tioripatea: The dramatic mountain pass itself is worth driving, with numerous short walks and waterfalls along the way.
- Thunder Creek Falls: A 96-foot waterfall just a short walk from the highway – combine both stops for a morning of easy nature walks.
- Fantail Falls: Another photogenic waterfall with a short trail, ideal for stretching your legs.
- Makarora: A tiny settlement with a café and a jet-boat operator, offering a taste of remote New Zealand.
- Wanaka: A scenic 1.5-hour drive east, where you can explore Lake Wanaka, Roy’s Peak, and the town’s thriving food scene.
