Okarito Lagoon, New Zealand’s largest unmodified wetland, is a serene coastal haven on the West Coast. This mirror-still lagoon, framed by snow-capped Southern Alps and dense rainforest, is a birdwatcher’s paradise and a kayaker’s dream. The small settlement of Okarito, with its historic gold-mining past, offers a peaceful base to explore this Ramsar-listed site.
Highlights & What to See
- Kayak the Lagoon: Paddle through tranquil channels among native bush; spot white herons (kotuku), royal spoonbills, and little blue penguins.
- Okarito Kiwi Sanctuary: Join a guided night walk to hear or see the rare Okarito brown kiwi (rowi) in its natural habitat.
- Okarito Trig Walk: A short, steep climb rewards with panoramic views of the lagoon, Tasman Sea, and Aoraki/Mount Cook on clear days.
- Three Mile Lagoon Walk: A gentle forest loop leading to a secluded beach; great for birdlife and coastal scenery.
- Historic Okarito: Explore the old gold-mining settlement, including the 1860s cemetery and the wharf area.
Suggested Time to Spend
Devote at least half a day to fully experience Okarito Lagoon. A morning kayak trip (2–3 hours) followed by the Trig Walk (1 hour) makes a perfect half-day itinerary. If you’re keen on the kiwi night tour, plan to stay overnight in Okarito or nearby Franz Josef. For a relaxed visit, combine with a picnic lunch by the lagoon edge.
