Okarito Kiwi Sanctuary

On the wild West Coast, the Okarito Kiwi Sanctuary is a conservation stronghold for the rarest kiwi species – the rowi (Okarito brown kiwi). This misty, moss-draped forest around the sleepy lagoon village of Okarito offers one of New Zealand's most intimate wildlife encounters. With only a few hundred rowi left in the wild, a guided twilight walk here is a privilege: you'll likely hear the male's haunting call and, with luck, spot a bird probing the damp leaf litter. The sanctuary's success story – from near extinction to a slowly recovering population – adds a poignant layer to the experience.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Plan for at least a full afternoon and evening. Arrive by mid-afternoon to explore the lagoon walks and village, then join a kiwi tour (typically 2–3 hours after dusk). The sanctuary is a must-do stop if you're driving the West Coast between Franz Josef and Haast. If you're short on time, you can still do the Pakihi Walk and enjoy the lagoon views, but the kiwi tour is the highlight.
