Whataroa

Whataroa is a tiny settlement on the West Coast of New Zealand's South Island, best known as the gateway to the remote and pristine Ōkārito Lagoon. This area is a haven for birdwatchers and nature lovers, offering a peaceful escape from the crowds. The surrounding rainforest and wetlands are rich with native flora and fauna, including the rare white heron (kōtuku) that nests in a protected colony nearby. Whataroa itself has a handful of amenities, including a café and a pub, making it a convenient stop on a journey along State Highway 6.
