Fox Glacier is one of New Zealand's most accessible glaciers, a 13-kilometre tongue of ancient ice that descends from the Southern Alps almost to sea level. The tiny village of Fox Glacier serves as your base, surrounded by temperate rainforest and the rugged peaks of Te Wāhipounamu – a UNESCO World Heritage site. The scale of the ice is humbling; its terminal face looms above the valley floor, and the deep crevasses and ice caves shift constantly, making every visit unique. Whether you view it from a lookout or step onto the ice, the glacier's raw power and ethereal blue light are unforgettable.
Highlights & What to See
- Fox Glacier Terminal Face Walk: A short, easy track leads to a viewpoint where you can watch ice calving into the river – a dramatic and ever-changing spectacle.
- Heli-Hike: For an up-close experience, a helicopter flight lands you on the ice for a guided walk among crevasses and ice tunnels; no experience needed.
- Lake Matheson: A 15-minute drive away, this mirror-still lake offers classic reflections of Aoraki/Mount Cook and Mount Tasman, especially at dawn or dusk.
- Gillespies Beach: A wild, black-sand beach with seal colonies, a historic gold-mining area, and a short walk to a seal colony viewpoint.
- Copland Valley & Welcome Flat Hot Pools: A challenging multi-day tramp leads to natural hot pools with stunning mountain views – best for experienced hikers.
- Fox Glacier Village: Quaint and compact, with cafes, a general store, and the Glacier Viewing Gallery offering panoramic valley views.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend one to two nights in Fox Glacier. A full day allows time for a heli-hike (half-day) plus an afternoon exploring Lake Matheson and the terminal face walk. If you're short on time, you can see the glacier from the lookout and visit the lake in a half-day, but the extra day lets you add a coastal walk or a scenic flight. For trampers, plan at least three days to incorporate the Copland Track or a longer glacier hike.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining

- Lake Wanaka: A 2.5-hour drive southeast, this lakeside town offers hiking, biking, and a vibrant food scene – a perfect stop on the way to Queenstown.
- West Coast Glaciers Scenic Drive: The road between Fox and Franz Josef is lined with rainforest walks, including the Minnehaha Walk and the Sentinel Rock Walk.
- Ship Creek: A short detour south of Haast features a dramatic beach with driftwood and a short boardwalk through dune forest.
