Fox Glacier

Fox Glacier is one of New Zealand's most accessible glaciers, a 13-kilometre tongue of ancient ice that descends from the Southern Alps almost to sea level. The tiny village of Fox Glacier serves as your base, surrounded by temperate rainforest and the rugged peaks of Te Wāhipounamu – a UNESCO World Heritage site. The scale of the ice is humbling; its terminal face looms above the valley floor, and the deep crevasses and ice caves shift constantly, making every visit unique. Whether you view it from a lookout or step onto the ice, the glacier's raw power and ethereal blue light are unforgettable.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most visitors spend one to two nights in Fox Glacier. A full day allows time for a heli-hike (half-day) plus an afternoon exploring Lake Matheson and the terminal face walk. If you're short on time, you can see the glacier from the lookout and visit the lake in a half-day, but the extra day lets you add a coastal walk or a scenic flight. For trampers, plan at least three days to incorporate the Copland Track or a longer glacier hike.
