On the wild West Coast, the Okarito Kiwi Sanctuary is a conservation stronghold for the rarest kiwi species – the rowi (Okarito brown kiwi). This misty, moss-draped forest around the sleepy lagoon village of Okarito offers one of New Zealand's most intimate wildlife encounters. With only a few hundred rowi left in the wild, a guided twilight walk here is a privilege: you'll likely hear the male's haunting call and, with luck, spot a bird probing the damp leaf litter. The sanctuary's success story – from near extinction to a slowly recovering population – adds a poignant layer to the experience.
Highlights & What to See
- Twilight Kiwi Walk – Join a Department of Conservation (DOC)-approved guide after dusk to track rowi in their natural habitat. The guides use radio telemetry to locate birds, and the thrill of seeing a kiwi in the wild is unforgettable.
- Okarito Lagoon – Before your walk, explore this vast estuarine lagoon by kayak or on the Okarito Trig Walk. The panoramic views of the Southern Alps from the trig are breathtaking.
- Okarito Village – This tiny settlement has a lovely beach, a historic cemetery, and a café. It's the perfect place to wait for your kiwi tour.
- Pakihi Walk – A short boardwalk through a unique wetland ecosystem, home to orchids, sundews, and rare birds like the fernbird.
Suggested Time to Spend
Plan for at least a full afternoon and evening. Arrive by mid-afternoon to explore the lagoon walks and village, then join a kiwi tour (typically 2–3 hours after dusk). The sanctuary is a must-do stop if you're driving the West Coast between Franz Josef and Haast. If you're short on time, you can still do the Pakihi Walk and enjoy the lagoon views, but the kiwi tour is the highlight.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Franz Josef Glacier – Just 30 minutes north, this famous glacier offers heli-hikes and valley walks.
- Fox Glacier – A quieter sibling, with its own glacier hikes and Lake Matheson reflections.
- Haast – The gateway to the World Heritage-listed Haast area, with blue pools and waterfalls.
- Whataroa – The White Heron Sanctuary Tours here let you see kotuku (white herons) at their only New Zealand breeding site.
