Nestled at the head of Lake Wanaka and the gateway to Mount Aspiring National Park, Makarora Village is a tiny settlement that packs a big punch for nature lovers. This is where the Southern Alps meet the wild West Coast, and the air smells of beech forest, river gravel, and adventure. With just a handful of buildings, it's the kind of place where you stop for a pie and end up staying for the views.
Highlights & What to See
- Blue Pools Track – an easy 30-minute walk through ancient forest to impossibly turquoise pools fed by the Makarora River. On a sunny day, the colour is almost surreal.
- Young River Swingbridge – a short, scenic walk to a suspension bridge over a crystal-clear river, perfect for a picnic or a quick leg-stretch.
- Makarora River – a braided river that changes mood daily. Great for photography, fishing (brown trout), or simply listening to the rush of water.
- Mount Aspiring National Park – the park's northern boundary starts right here. Day hikes, heli-hikes, and wilderness experiences depart from the village.
- Makarora Sheepdog Museum – quirky and charming, this tiny museum celebrates the working dogs that shaped the high-country farming culture of New Zealand.
- Haast Pass – the road through the pass is a journey in itself, with waterfalls, ancient rainforest, and the chance to spot kea (alpine parrots).
Suggested Time to Spend
Most travellers pass through Makarora in an hour or two – enough for a short walk, a photo stop, and a coffee. But if you're keen to explore the national park or do some serious tramping, plan for a half-day or even an overnight stay. The village has basic accommodation and a campground, making it a peaceful base for a night. For a self-drive itinerary, budget 2–3 hours to do the Blue Pools walk and grab a bite before continuing over Haast Pass.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining

- Haast – 55 km west, the gateway to the West Coast's glaciers, with the Haast River Safari and whitebait patties.
- Fox & Franz Josef Glaciers – a scenic 2-hour drive from Makarora via Haast, these glaciers are a must for heli-hikes and ice walks.
- Lake Wanaka & Lake Hawea – both lakes are stunning for scenic drives, kayaking, or simply soaking up the alpine views.
- Aspiring Track – a longer tramping route that connects Makarora to the Matukituki Valley and the heart of Mount Aspiring National Park.
