Flanking the braided Makarora River just north of Haast Pass, this easy walk rewards you with classic West Coast scenery: glacier-fed turquoise water, river stones smoothed by millennia, and dense beech forest that smells of damp earth and moss. The track is short but packs a punch, offering views of snowcapped peaks that frame the valley like a postcard. It's a perfect leg-stretcher on the drive between Wanaka and the coast, and a quiet spot to watch kea or spot whitebait fishers in season.
Highlights & What to See
- The braided river channels: From the track, you get a textbook view of how a glacial river spreads across its floodplain – the water shifts colour from milky blue to clear depending on the melt.
- Beech forest & birdlife: Listen for the chime of bellbirds and the raucous call of kea. The silver beech trunks are often cloaked in moss and ferns.
- Mount Aspiring National Park backdrop: The walk sits within the park boundary, so the mountain views are pure wilderness – especially photogenic in late afternoon light.
- River beach access: At the end of the walk you can step onto a wide gravel beach. Ideal for a picnic or a quick paddle (water is icy even in summer).
- Interpretive signs: Learn about Māori pounamu (greenstone) trails and early European gold miners who once scoured these gravels.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allow 30–45 minutes for the 1.5 km loop. You'll want another 15 minutes to sit on the riverbank and soak it in. It's a short stop, best slotted into a longer driving day – say, between Lake Wanaka and Haast township. If you're a keen photographer, plan for golden hour (early morning or late afternoon) when the light hits the peaks.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining

- Lake Wanaka: Head 45 minutes east for lakeside cafés, the famous Wanaka tree, and more hiking options.
- Haast Township: 30 minutes west, where you can refuel, grab a coffee, and visit the Haast Visitor Centre.
