Lake Matheson is a mirror-still glacial lake near Fox Glacier, famous for its perfect reflections of Aoraki/Mount Cook and Mount Tasman. The easy loop walk through ancient rimu and kahikatea forest rewards you with postcard views of New Zealand's highest peaks mirrored in the dark, tannin-stained waters. Dawn and dusk are magical, when the lake is glassy and the mountains glow pink. Even on a cloudy day, the moody reflections are unforgettable.
