Ship Creek Walk is a short but captivating coastal trail on the wild West Coast of New Zealand's South Island, just north of Haast. This easy loop walk winds through lush native forest, past serene dunes, and onto a moody, driftwood-strewn beach where the Tasman Sea crashes against the shore. It's a perfect introduction to the untamed beauty of the Haast region, with rich Māori and European history woven into the landscape.
Highlights & What to See
- Kahikatea Swamp Forest: Walk through one of the few remaining lowland kahikatea (white pine) forests, where boardwalks protect the delicate wetland ecosystem.
- Ship Creek Beach: A wild, windswept beach with dramatic driftwood sculptures and the roar of the sea. Look for the remains of the eponymous shipwreck, the SS Charles, which ran aground in 1896.
- Dune Lake Walk: A short side trail leads to a serene dune lake, home to waterfowl and surrounded by flax and ferns.
- Historic Gold Mining: Interpretive panels tell the story of the area's gold rush past, including the miners who once worked the creek.
- Birdlife: Spot native birds like the kererū (wood pigeon), tūī, and occasionally the rare kākā.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allow 30 to 45 minutes for the full loop, including time to linger on the beach and read the interpretive signs. It's an ideal quick stop on a road trip along the West Coast, especially as a leg-stretcher between Haast and Fox Glacier. Combine with a picnic if you have more time.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining

- Haast River: Kayak or jet boat on the braided Haast River, or walk the Haast River Walkway.
- Monro Beach Walk: Further north, this 40-minute walk is a prime spot to see Fiordland crested penguins (seasonal).
- Fox and Franz Josef Glaciers: About 1-2 hours north, these iconic glaciers offer heli-hikes and valley walks.
