Fantail Falls Walk is a quick, rewarding detour off State Highway 6 in South Westland, offering a glimpse into the untamed beauty of the Haast region. The short, easy stroll through lush native bush leads to a stunning fan-shaped waterfall cascading over a schist rock face into a clear pool. It’s a perfect leg-stretcher on the drive between Haast and Wanaka, and a great spot for a picnic or a refreshing dip on a warm day.
Highlights & What to See
- Fantail Falls: The namesake waterfall, with water fanning out over a wide rock face, especially impressive after rain.
- Native Forest Walk: The short track winds through beech and podocarp forest, with ferns and mosses lining the path.
- Swimming and Photography: The plunge pool at the base is inviting in summer, and the falls make for dramatic photos.
- Nearby Blue Pools: A short drive south, the Blue Pools offer crystal-clear water and a swing bridge over the Makarora River.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allow 20–30 minutes for the walk itself, plus extra time if you want to swim or have a snack. It’s an ideal 30–45 minute stop on a road trip; you can easily combine it with other short walks in the Haast area.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Haast: The nearest town, with cafes, a visitor centre, and the Haast River.
- Thunder Creek Falls: Another impressive waterfall walk just north of Fantail Falls.
- Makarora: A small settlement with the Blue Pools and access to Mount Aspiring National Park.
- Wanaka: About an hour’s drive east, offering lake views, hiking, and dining.
