Gillespies Beach is a wild, windswept stretch of black sand on the West Coast, where the Tasman Sea crashes against a shoreline littered with driftwood and the remnants of a gold-mining past. This is a place of raw beauty, where you can wander for hours with only the roar of the ocean and the cry of seabirds for company. The beach is backed by dense native forest and offers stunning views of the Southern Alps, making it a perfect spot for solitude and dramatic coastal scenery.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Plan for 1–2 hours to explore the beach and the immediate historic sites. If you're keen on a longer walk, allow 3–4 hours for the return hike on the Gillespies Beach–Powers Creek Walkway. The beach is also a great stop for a picnic lunch or a quiet afternoon, so you could easily spend half a day here if you're in no rush.
