Harihari

Harihari, a tiny settlement on the wild West Coast of New Zealand’s South Island, is the gateway to the seldom-visited southern glaciers and the dense native forests of the Poerua Valley. It’s a place where the road narrows, the rain feels primal, and you’ll likely have the trails all to yourself. This is backcountry New Zealand at its most authentic – raw, quiet, and utterly compelling.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Harihari is a stopover, not a destination in itself. Plan for 1–2 hours to explore the walks and museum, or half a day if you add the Poerua Glacier track. Most travellers pass through on the drive between Franz Josef and Hokitika, so it’s an ideal lunch or photo break. If you’re a keen tramper, consider an overnight trip into the Poerua Valley for deeper wilderness immersion.
