Harihari, a tiny settlement on the wild West Coast of New Zealand’s South Island, is the gateway to the seldom-visited southern glaciers and the dense native forests of the Poerua Valley. It’s a place where the road narrows, the rain feels primal, and you’ll likely have the trails all to yourself. This is backcountry New Zealand at its most authentic – raw, quiet, and utterly compelling.
Highlights & What to See
- Poerua River & Glacier Viewing: A short walk from the car park leads to a stunning viewpoint of the Poerua Glacier, hanging dramatically above the valley floor. The track is rough but rewarding.
- Harihari Coastal Walkway: A gentle boardwalk through coastal forest and along the wild Tasman Sea shoreline – great for spotting seabirds and feeling the full force of the West Coast weather.
- Harihari Museum & Heritage Centre: A small but fascinating museum housed in a historic building, telling the story of the area’s logging, farming, and pioneering past.
- Lake Ianthe: A serene, mirror-like lake just north of town, perfect for a picnic or a quick paddle. The reflections of the Southern Alps on a calm day are unforgettable.
- Whataroa & the White Heron Sanctuary: A short drive south, this small town is the departure point for guided tours to the only mainland breeding colony of the rare white heron (kotuku).
Suggested Time to Spend
Harihari is a stopover, not a destination in itself. Plan for 1–2 hours to explore the walks and museum, or half a day if you add the Poerua Glacier track. Most travellers pass through on the drive between Franz Josef and Hokitika, so it’s an ideal lunch or photo break. If you’re a keen tramper, consider an overnight trip into the Poerua Valley for deeper wilderness immersion.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Franz Josef & Fox Glaciers: The famous glacier towns are about an hour’s drive south – combine Harihari with a glacier hike or heli-tour.
- Hokitika: An hour north, this artsy coastal town offers pounamu (greenstone) galleries, a lively Saturday market, and the Hokitika Gorge.
- Whataroa: Just 15 minutes south, the gateway to the White Heron Sanctuary and a great spot for birdwatching.
- Lake Mapourika: A stunning lake near Franz Josef, perfect for kayaking or a peaceful walk through rainforest.
