Franz Josef Glacier is one of New Zealand's most accessible and dramatic glaciers, descending from the Southern Alps into temperate rainforest just a few kilometers from the coast. This dynamic river of ice offers a rare opportunity to walk on a glacier without mountaineering experience, thanks to guided heli-hikes and ice climbing tours. The small, friendly township of Franz Josef serves as your base, with a handful of cafes, restaurants, and accommodation options that cater to adventurers and nature lovers alike.
Highlights & What to See
- Heli-Hike on Franz Josef Glacier: A helicopter flight lands you on the ice, where you'll spend hours exploring crevasses, ice caves, and blue pinnacles with a guide.
- Franz Josef Glacier Valley Walk: A free, easy 1.5-hour return walk from the car park to the terminal face viewpoint, offering stunning views of the glacier's snout and the surrounding mountains. Note that the glacier is receding, so the walk is longer than in the past.
- West Coast Wildlife Centre: See the rare rowi kiwi (the rarest kiwi species) and tuatara in a conservation-focused facility. Book a night tour for a chance to see kiwi in a nocturnal house.
- Okarito Lagoon & Kiwi Sanctuary: A short drive south, this pristine lagoon offers kayaking, birdwatching, and guided night walks to spot the rowi kiwi in the wild.
- Lake Matheson: Famous for its mirror reflections of Aoraki/Mount Cook and Mount Tasman, this easy loop walk is a must for photographers, especially at dawn or dusk.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend one full day and one night in Franz Josef. Arrive in the afternoon, take the valley walk, and enjoy a meal in town. The next morning, book a heli-hike (allow 3–4 hours) and then drive south to Fox Glacier or continue to the West Coast. If you have two nights, add a kayak trip on Okarito Lagoon or a night walk for kiwi spotting. The glacier is best visited between October and April when weather is more stable.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining

- Hokitika: 130 km north, this artsy town is famous for greenstone (pounamu) carving, a wild beach, and the Hokitika Gorge with its turquoise waters.
- Haast Pass & Mount Aspiring National Park: 80 km south, the road over Haast Pass leads to the stunning Blue Pools, Thunder Creek Falls, and the gateway to Mount Aspiring National Park.
