Gillespies Beach is a wild, windswept stretch of black sand on the West Coast, where the Tasman Sea crashes against a shoreline littered with driftwood and the remnants of a gold-mining past. This is a place of raw beauty, where you can wander for hours with only the roar of the ocean and the cry of seabirds for company. The beach is backed by dense native forest and offers stunning views of the Southern Alps, making it a perfect spot for solitude and dramatic coastal scenery.
Highlights & What to See
- Black Sand Beach: Walk along the vast, dark sand beach, often strewn with interesting driftwood and shells. The powerful surf makes swimming unsafe, but the beach is perfect for long, contemplative walks.
- Gillespies Beach Gold Mining Area: Explore the historic gold mining relics, including the remains of a dredge and old miners' huts. Interpretive panels tell the story of the area's short-lived gold rush in the 1860s.
- Gillespies Beach Track: A short, easy walk from the car park to the beach, passing through a tunnel of lush native bush. For a longer adventure, continue on the Gillespies Beach–Powers Creek Walkway, which follows the old miners' route.
- Seal Colony: At the northern end of the beach, a colony of New Zealand fur seals can often be seen basking on the rocks. Keep a respectful distance and watch them in their natural habitat.
- Sunset Views: The beach faces west, making it an ideal spot to watch the sun sink into the Tasman Sea, painting the sky in hues of orange and pink.
Suggested Time to Spend
Plan for 1–2 hours to explore the beach and the immediate historic sites. If you're keen on a longer walk, allow 3–4 hours for the return hike on the Gillespies Beach–Powers Creek Walkway. The beach is also a great stop for a picnic lunch or a quiet afternoon, so you could easily spend half a day here if you're in no rush.
