Few experiences in New Zealand match the raw thrill of standing at the foot of Franz Josef Glacier. This dynamic river of ice cascades from the Southern Alps down to just 300 metres above sea level, making it one of the most accessible glaciers on the planet. The walks here range from short, family-friendly viewpoints to guided heli-hikes that let you tread on the ice itself. Even from a distance, the glacier’s constant creaking and groaning remind you that this is a living, moving landscape.
Highlights & What to See
- Glacier Viewpoint Walk – A 20-minute stroll through rainforest to a lookout with jaw-dropping views of the glacier’s terminal face. Best in late afternoon when the ice glows blue.
- Terminal Face Walk – A longer 1.5-hour return track that brings you to the rocky moraine at the glacier’s base. You can feel the chill radiating off the ice and hear meltwater streams gurgling beneath the rubble.
- Guided Heli-Hike – The ultimate way to experience the glacier: a short helicopter flight lands you on the ice, where a guide leads you through crevasses, ice caves, and seracs. No technical skills required, but a good fitness level helps.
- Sentinel Rock Walk – A steep 30-minute climb to a rocky outcrop overlooking the entire glacier valley. It’s a perfect spot for photos, especially at sunrise.
- Lake Wombat – A serene glacial lake formed by retreating ice, accessible via a short detour on the Douglas Walk. The reflections of the surrounding peaks are mesmerising.
Suggested Time to Spend
If you’re short on time, the Glacier Viewpoint Walk can be done in under an hour, including driving from Franz Josef village. For a more immersive experience, allocate half a day: combine the Terminal Face Walk (2 hours) with a guided heli-hike (3–4 hours total). Most visitors find that a full day is ideal, allowing you to take in the scenery at a relaxed pace and maybe squeeze in a soak at the nearby hot pools afterwards.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Franz Josef Village – The gateway town, just 5 km from the glacier, with cafes, a supermarket, and the Glacier Hot Pools for a post-walk soak.
- Fox Glacier – A 25-minute drive south, this sibling glacier offers similar walks and a more laid-back village vibe.
- Lake Matheson – Famous for its mirror-like reflections of Aoraki/Mount Cook and Mount Tasman, just 30 minutes from Franz Josef.
- Okarito Lagoon – A tranquil coastal wetland 30 minutes north, where you can kayak or take a boat tour to spot white herons (kotuku).
- Whataroa – A small town 40 minutes north, home to the White Heron Sanctuary Tours, a must for bird lovers.
- Hokitika Gorge – About an hour north, this vivid turquoise river gorge is a photographer’s dream and a great stop on the way to Greymouth.
