White Heron Sanctuary

Deep in the lush West Coast rainforest, the White Heron Sanctuary (Kotuku) offers a rare glimpse of New Zealand's most elegant bird. Accessible only by a guided tour from Whataroa, this protected breeding colony on the Waitangiroto River is a sacred site for Māori and a bucket-list experience for bird lovers. The journey itself — a short bus ride and a gentle boat trip through swamp forests alive with native ferns and birdsong — sets the scene for the star attraction: the brilliant white kotuku with their impossibly long, delicate plumes. Seeing them glide in to feed their chicks is a moment of pure magic.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Allow a half-day for the tour, which typically runs 2.5–3 hours from the Whataroa base. Combine it with a morning exploring Whataroa itself or a stop at the Franz Josef Glacier, about 30 minutes south. The sanctuary is a detour from State Highway 6, so it works well as a morning or afternoon excursion en route between Hokitika and Franz Josef.
