Fox Glacier Town is a tiny alpine settlement on New Zealand's West Coast that serves as the gateway to the magnificent Fox Glacier, a 13-kilometre-long river of ice descending from the Southern Alps into temperate rainforest. The village itself is a quiet collection of cafes, lodges, and helipads, but the real draw is the dramatic, ever-changing glacier and the wild, untamed landscape surrounding it. With a population of just a few hundred, this is a place where the roar of the ice and the call of the kea are the soundtrack to your stay.
Highlights & What to See
- Fox Glacier: The main attraction. Take a guided ice hike or heli-hike onto the glacier to experience its crevasses, ice caves, and blue ice up close. For a free view, walk the short track to the glacier terminal face viewpoint (note the glacier has retreated significantly, so the ice is not always visible from the path).
- Lake Matheson: A short drive from town, this mirror-still lake offers iconic reflections of Aoraki/Mount Cook and Mount Tasman on calm mornings. The easy 2.6 km loop walk through rimu and kahikatea forest is a must.
- Fox Glacier Heli-Hike: For the ultimate experience, a helicopter drops you onto the nevé of the glacier, followed by a guided walk among spectacular ice formations. Book in advance as weather can cancel flights.
- Gillespies Beach: A wild black-sand beach 20 minutes' drive away, where you can see the dramatic meeting of rainforest and Tasman Sea. Look for the historic gold-mining relics and, if you're lucky, penguins at dusk.
- Te Weheka Walkway: A 2-hour return walk through lush native forest along the Fox River, offering views of the glacier and surrounding peaks.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend one to two nights in Fox Glacier Town. A full day allows time for a glacier activity (heli-hike or ice hike) in the morning, followed by an afternoon exploring Lake Matheson and Gillespies Beach. If you're short on time, you can drive through and do the Lake Matheson loop in an hour, but the glacier experience is weather-dependent, so a flexible schedule is wise.
