Fox Glacier is one of New Zealand's most accessible and dramatic glaciers, a river of ice that cascades from the Southern Alps down into temperate rainforest. This tiny West Coast settlement is your launchpad for guided ice hikes, heli-hikes, and breathtaking views of the glacier's terminal face. The village itself is low-key, with a handful of cafes, a general store, and a pub where locals and travellers swap stories after a day on the ice.
Highlights & What to See
- Guided Glacier Walks – Strap on crampons and follow a guide onto the lower glacier, exploring ice caves, crevasses, and blue-ice formations. For a more adventurous experience, book a heli-hike that lands you higher on the glacier for pristine, less-trafficked ice.
- Heli-Hike Tours – A scenic helicopter flight over the glacier is unforgettable, and landing on the nevé lets you walk on ancient ice with panoramic views of Aoraki/Mount Cook and Mount Tasman.
- Lake Matheson – Just 6 km from the village, this mirror-still lake offers classic reflections of the glacier and mountains. The easy loop track takes about 1.5 hours and is best at dawn or dusk.
- Fox Glacier Viewpoint – A short walk from the car park leads to a viewing platform where you can see the glacier's terminal face up close (access can change due to ice conditions).
- Gillespies Beach – A wild, black-sand beach 20 minutes' drive away, with a short walk to a seal colony and historic gold-mining relics.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend one to two nights in Fox Glacier. A full day is ideal: do a guided glacier walk or heli-hike in the morning (allow 3–4 hours), then visit Lake Matheson in the late afternoon for the best light. If you have a second day, explore Gillespies Beach or take a scenic flight over the glaciers.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Franz Josef Glacier – Just 23 km north, this twin glacier has a more developed village and equally impressive ice walks and hot pools.
- Okarito Lagoon – A serene coastal lagoon 30 km north, perfect for kayaking, birdwatching, and a short walk to a lookout with views over the Southern Alps.
- Haast Pass – Drive 120 km south through lush rainforest and past waterfalls to reach the gateway to Mount Aspiring National Park and the Otago region.
- West Coast Glaciers Scenic Flight – Combine Fox and Franz Josef glaciers on a flightseeing tour from either village.
