The Copland Track is a rugged backcountry tramp on the West Coast of the South Island, leading into the heart of the Southern Alps. This challenging route rewards hikers with steaming natural hot pools, glacial valleys, and a true wilderness experience far from the crowds.
Highlights & What to See
- Welcome Flat Hot Pools: Soak in natural hot springs surrounded by alpine scenery – a well-earned reward after a day's hike.
- Glacial Crossings: Cross several swing bridges over milky glacier-fed rivers, with views of the Copland and Hooker Glaciers.
- Alpine Meadows & Rainforest: Walk through dense beech forest and open alpine meadows, with chances to spot kea and other native birds.
- Historic Huts: Stay in basic Department of Conservation (DOC) huts, including Welcome Flat Hut, which has bunks and a wood stove.
- Mount Cook Views: On clear days, the track offers stunning vistas of Aoraki/Mount Cook and the surrounding peaks.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most trampers allow 3 to 4 days for the return journey from the Copland Valley road end to Welcome Flat and beyond. The track is 17 km (10.5 miles) one way, and while the first day to Welcome Flat is relatively gentle, the upper section requires route-finding and is best attempted by experienced parties. Plan to spend two nights at Welcome Flat Hut to fully enjoy the hot pools and day-hike up the valley.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Fox Glacier: Visit the Fox Glacier township and take a guided walk or heli-hike on the glacier itself.
- Franz Josef Glacier: Another stunning glacier with more extensive walking tracks and hot pools.
- Lake Matheson: Famous for its mirror-like reflections of Aoraki/Mount Cook, just a short drive from Fox Glacier.
- West Coast Wilderness Trail: A cycle trail through rainforest and along the coast, ideal for a day trip.
- Okarito Lagoon: A peaceful coastal lagoon with kayaking and birdwatching opportunities, including the rare white heron.
