The Copland Track is a rugged backcountry tramp on the West Coast of the South Island, leading into the heart of the Southern Alps. This challenging route rewards hikers with steaming natural hot pools, glacial valleys, and a true wilderness experience far from the crowds.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most trampers allow 3 to 4 days for the return journey from the Copland Valley road end to Welcome Flat and beyond. The track is 17 km (10.5 miles) one way, and while the first day to Welcome Flat is relatively gentle, the upper section requires route-finding and is best attempted by experienced parties. Plan to spend two nights at Welcome Flat Hut to fully enjoy the hot pools and day-hike up the valley.
