Arrowtown is a beautifully preserved gold-mining town nestled in the Otago region, just a 20-minute drive from Queenstown. Its main street, Buckingham Street, is lined with historic stone buildings, boutique shops, and cafes that spill onto the pavement. In autumn, the town is ablaze with gold and red leaves from the European trees planted by early settlers. The Arrow River, which once yielded rich gold deposits, now offers peaceful walking trails and swimming holes. Arrowtown has a genuine, lived-in feel that sets it apart from purpose-built tourist towns.
Highlights & What to See
- Lakes District Museum – Housed in a former bank, this excellent museum tells the story of the Otago gold rush with engaging exhibits and a recreated miner's hut. Allow at least an hour.
- Arrowtown Chinese Settlement – A poignant historic site featuring restored huts and a tearoom that recall the lives of Chinese gold miners who faced discrimination. Free entry.
- Arrow River Trail – A gentle walk along the river, perfect for a picnic or a dip in summer. Pan for gold (pans available at the museum) – you might find a few specks.
- Historic Buildings – Don't miss the Arrowtown Post Office (c.1870), St Patrick's Catholic Church, and the charming stone cottages on Berkshire Street.
- Tobins Track – A short, steep climb rewarding with panoramic views over the town and surrounding peaks. Best done in late afternoon light.
Suggested Time to Spend
Arrowtown deserves at least half a day – ideally a full day if you want to explore the museum, walk the river trail, and have a leisurely lunch. Many visitors combine it with a morning in Queenstown and an afternoon here. If you're short on time, a two-hour wander along Buckingham Street and a quick loop of the Chinese Settlement still gives a flavour. On a self-drive itinerary, Arrowtown makes a perfect lunch stop en route to or from the Crown Range Road.
