Glenorchy sits at the northern tip of Lake Wakatipu, where the Dart and Rees Rivers meet. This tiny settlement is the gateway to some of New Zealand's most dramatic alpine landscapes, with jagged peaks rising straight from the water's edge. The drive from Queenstown along the lake's edge is a stunner in itself, but Glenorchy feels like a world apart—quiet, raw, and utterly spectacular. It's a place for walkers, photographers, and anyone who wants to feel small in the face of big nature.
Highlights & What to See
- Glenorchy Wharf – The iconic red-roofed wharf with reflections of snowcapped mountains in the lake; one of the most photographed spots in New Zealand.
- Paradise – A short drive north along a gravel road leads to this valley of golden tussock and beech forest, used as a filming location for The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit (Isengard, Lothlórien).
- Routeburn Track – One of New Zealand's Great Walks starts here; even a day walk to the Routeburn Flats hut offers incredible alpine scenery.
- Dart River Jet Boat & Wilderness Safaris – Explore the braided Dart River valley on a jet boat or guided 4WD tour, with stunning views of the Humboldt and Forbes Mountains.
- Glenorchy Walkway – An easy 1–2 hour loop along the lake and lagoon, great for birdlife and mountain views.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors come as a day trip from Queenstown (45 minutes drive), but Glenorchy deserves at least a half-day to explore the wharf, walkway, and Paradise. If you're a keen hiker or want to do the Routeburn Track, plan for a full day or overnight. For a relaxed pace, combine a morning in Glenorchy with an afternoon in Queenstown.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Queenstown – The adventure capital is an easy drive south and offers endless dining, activities, and lake cruises.
- Kinloch – A tiny lakeside settlement with a historic lodge and the start of the Greenstone Track.
- Lake Wakatipu – The whole lake shoreline, including the drive to Glenorchy, is dotted with viewpoints and picnic spots.
- Fiordland National Park – A longer drive south leads to Milford Sound and the Hollyford Valley, but worth the detour for dramatic fiords.
