Devils Punchbowl Waterfall

Thundering down a sheer rock face in Arthur’s Pass National Park, the Devils Punchbowl Waterfall is one of New Zealand’s most dramatic roadside spectacles. A short but steep walk through ancient beech forest leads to a viewing platform where you can feel the spray of this 131-metre cascade as it plunges into a deep, dark pool. The raw power of the water and the misty, mossy surroundings create an almost primeval atmosphere — a must-stop for anyone driving the TranzAlpine route.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Allow 30–45 minutes for the return walk and time to soak in the views from the platform. If you’re driving between Christchurch and the West Coast, it makes a perfect 20-minute detour — combine it with a lunch stop in Arthur’s Pass Village for a relaxed hour or two.
