Hokitika Gorge

Hokitika Gorge is a jaw-dropping slice of West Coast wilderness where the Hokitika River surges through a narrow, steep-sided canyon of ancient granite. The water here is an almost surreal shade of milky turquoise, stained by glacial flour ground from the Southern Alps. A short walk leads to a swingbridge that offers vertiginous views into the chasm, and on sunny days the contrast between the vivid blue water, dark rock, and lush native bush is nothing short of spectacular.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Allow 1–2 hours for the walk and plenty of time to soak in the views. It’s a quick detour from State Highway 6, so you can easily fit it into a morning or afternoon on a self-drive journey between Hokitika and the glaciers. For photographers, aim to arrive in the late afternoon when the light is softer.
