Arthurs Pass is a rugged alpine village straddling the Southern Alps, where the road snakes through dramatic mountain scenery and native beech forests. It’s a gateway to some of New Zealand’s most exhilarating tramping tracks, offering a raw, untamed slice of the South Island’s wilderness.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most visitors pass through in a day, but to truly soak up the alpine atmosphere, plan an overnight stay. A full day allows for one major hike and a few shorter walks; two days give you time for a longer tramp or to ride the TranzAlpine. The village has basic accommodation and a pub, so you can pace your exploration without rushing.
