Roys Peak Track
Roys Peak Track is one of New Zealand's most iconic day hikes, offering a challenging but utterly rewarding climb to a panoramic summit above Lake Wanaka. The track switchbacks relentlessly through golden tussock slopes, with the lake and Southern Alps unfolding behind you with every step. The payoff at the top is a jaw-dropping 360-degree vista that has graced countless Instagram feeds—but seeing it in person is something else entirely.
Highlights & What to See
- Summit views: The classic photo spot overlooking Lake Wanaka, with Mt Aspiring and the glaciers of the Southern Alps on the horizon.
- Wildflowers in spring: From November to January, the lower slopes are dotted with bright yellow Mount Cook buttercups.
- Wildlife spotting: Keep an eye out for native birds like the kea (mountain parrot) and South Island robin.
- Sunrise or sunset hike: The track is popular for alpine starts or evening walks to catch golden light over the lake.
- Photography opportunities: The switchbacks themselves make for striking compositions, especially when the tussock is lit by low sun.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allow 5 to 7 hours return, depending on your fitness and how long you linger at the top. The track is 16 km return with 1,300 m elevation gain—a serious climb. Start early (before 8 am) to avoid the midday heat and crowds, and carry plenty of water and sun protection. Most people tackle it as a half-day activity, leaving the afternoon for relaxing in Wanaka or exploring the lake.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Wanaka: The charming lakeside town is the gateway to the track, with great cafés, restaurants, and the famous Wanaka Tree.
- Mt Aspiring National Park: Drive 30 minutes to Rob Roy Glacier Track for a shorter, equally scenic alpine walk.
- Cardrona Valley: A scenic drive over the Crown Range road, with the historic Cardrona Hotel and ski fields in winter.
- Queenstown: About an hour's drive south, offering bungee jumping, jet boating, and the Ben Lomond Track.
- Glendhu Bay: A quiet spot on the lake for swimming, kayaking, and camping, just 10 minutes from Wanaka.
