Cromwell, a sun-drenched town at the confluence of the Kawarau and Clutha rivers, is the heart of Central Otago's fruit-growing region. Once a gold-rush settlement, it's now a laid-back base for exploring the region's wineries, heritage trails, and the dramatic landscapes of the Cromwell Gorge. The old town, partially submerged by Lake Dunstan, was relocated to the current site, leaving a historic precinct with stone buildings and a charming lakeside atmosphere.
Highlights & What to See
- Old Cromwell Town: Wander the restored 1860s streets, visit the Cromwell Museum, and browse artisan shops and cafes along the lakefront.
- Goldfields Mining Centre: Try your hand at gold panning and see historic mining machinery in a scenic riverside setting.
- Wineries & Fruit Stalls: Sample award-winning Pinot Noir at vineyards like Mt Difficulty or Carrick, and pick up fresh stone fruit from roadside stalls in summer.
