Roys Peak Track

Roys Peak Track is one of New Zealand's most iconic day hikes, offering a challenging but utterly rewarding climb to a panoramic summit above Lake Wanaka. The track switchbacks relentlessly through golden tussock slopes, with the lake and Southern Alps unfolding behind you with every step. The payoff at the top is a jaw-dropping 360-degree vista that has graced countless Instagram feeds—but seeing it in person is something else entirely.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Allow 5 to 7 hours return, depending on your fitness and how long you linger at the top. The track is 16 km return with 1,300 m elevation gain—a serious climb. Start early (before 8 am) to avoid the midday heat and crowds, and carry plenty of water and sun protection. Most people tackle it as a half-day activity, leaving the afternoon for relaxing in Wanaka or exploring the lake.
