Central Otago is a land of stark, dramatic beauty, where golden tussock hills rise against a deep blue sky and the rivers carve through ancient schist rock. This is New Zealand’s only continental climate region, bringing hot, dry summers and crisp, cold winters – perfect for pinot noir grapes that have put the area on the world wine map. But beyond the cellar doors, Central Otago is a playground for cyclists, hikers, and history buffs, with historic gold-mining towns, the rugged Otago Rail Trail, and the shimmering lakes of the Southern Lakes district. It’s a place where you feel the raw, open space of the South Island.
Highlights & What to See
- Wine tasting in Gibbston Valley – explore cellar doors in the ‘Valley of the Vines’, with pinot noir, riesling, and aromatic whites.
- Cycling the Otago Central Rail Trail – a 150-km adventure through tunnels, viaducts, and historic goldfields, suitable for all fitness levels.
- Historic Arrowtown – wander the preserved Chinese settlement and try gold panning in the Arrow River.
- Bannockburn Sluicings – hike among eerie, water-carved cliffs and old gold workings near Cromwell.
- Lake Dunstan and the Cromwell Heritage Precinct – a restored gold-rush town with cafes and galleries.
- St Bathans – a tiny historic village with the Blue Lake, a stunning turquoise former gold pit.
- Alexandra and the Otago Central Rail Trail – start or finish your ride in this friendly town with the famous clock on the hill.
- Naseby – New Zealand’s only indoor curling rink and a charming forested town.
Suggested Time to Spend
Central Otago deserves at least 3–5 days to do it justice. Spend a day cycling a section of the Rail Trail (or hire e-bikes to go further), a day wine tasting in Gibbston and Bannockburn, and another exploring Arrowtown and the historic sites. Add a day for hiking or a boat cruise on Lake Dunstan. If you’re short on time, a 2-day loop from Queenstown – taking in Arrowtown, Gibbston, and Cromwell – gives a tasty sample.
