Cycling or walking the Otago Central Rail Trail is one of New Zealand's great outdoor experiences. This 150-km former railway line cuts through the dramatic landscapes of Central Otago, from the historic gold-mining town of Middlemarch to Clyde. Along the way, you'll cross viaducts, burrow through tunnels, and pass through tiny settlements that boomed during the gold rush. The trail is gentle, well-maintained, and open to cyclists, walkers, and horse riders, offering a unique way to soak up the region's big skies, rugged mountains, and pioneering history.
Highlights & What to See
- Poolburn Gorge & Viaducts – The most dramatic section, with a long tunnel and a high viaduct spanning a deep ravine; the engineering is jaw-dropping.
- Historic Railway Stations – Restored stations at Ranfurly, Wedderburn, and Lauder are like stepping back in time, with local museums and information.
- Chatto Creek Tavern – A legendary pub stop for a cold beer and a hearty meal, right on the trail.
- Manuherikia River Valley – Golden tussock-covered hills and the winding river create classic Central Otago scenery.
- Clyde – The trail's end (or start) is a charming town with a historic precinct, great cafes, and the Clyde Dam.
- Stargazing – The trail lies in a Dark Sky Reserve – on a clear night, the Milky Way is staggering.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most people take 3 to 5 days to cycle the full trail, staying in cozy B&Bs or lodges along the way. If you're short on time, you can do a day ride on the best sections, like the Poolburn Gorge loop (around 3–4 hours). Walkers usually allow 5–7 days. The trail is doable year-round, but spring and autumn offer the best weather and fewer crowds.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining

- Dunedin – A city of Victorian architecture, the Otago Peninsula, and wildlife like albatross and penguins.
