Cycling or walking the Otago Central Rail Trail is one of New Zealand's great outdoor experiences. This 150-km former railway line cuts through the dramatic landscapes of Central Otago, from the historic gold-mining town of Middlemarch to Clyde. Along the way, you'll cross viaducts, burrow through tunnels, and pass through tiny settlements that boomed during the gold rush. The trail is gentle, well-maintained, and open to cyclists, walkers, and horse riders, offering a unique way to soak up the region's big skies, rugged mountains, and pioneering history.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most people take 3 to 5 days to cycle the full trail, staying in cozy B&Bs or lodges along the way. If you're short on time, you can do a day ride on the best sections, like the Poolburn Gorge loop (around 3–4 hours). Walkers usually allow 5–7 days. The trail is doable year-round, but spring and autumn offer the best weather and fewer crowds.
