Tahunanui Beach is Nelson's beloved urban stretch of golden sand, backed by a grassy reserve and fringed with gentle waves. It's a classic Kiwi seaside escape where locals come to swim, sail, and soak up the sun. The beach is safe for swimming, with a patrolled area in summer, and the adjacent Tahunanui Beach Reserve offers playgrounds, a skate park, and plenty of picnic spots. It's the perfect place to unwind after exploring Nelson's arts and wine scene.
Highlights & What to See
- Swimming & Water Sports: The calm, shallow waters are ideal for swimming, paddleboarding, and kayaking. Windsurfers and kiteboarders often take advantage of the afternoon breezes.
- Tahunanui Beach Reserve: A sprawling grassy park with a playground, mini-golf, a skate park, and a seasonal water play area – great for families.
- Coastal Walkway: A pleasant paved path runs along the beach, perfect for a stroll or bike ride, with views across Tasman Bay to the mountains of the Abel Tasman National Park.
- Sunset Views: The beach faces northwest, making it a prime spot for watching the sun sink into the sea.
- Wildlife Spotting: Keep an eye out for oystercatchers, gulls, and occasionally little blue penguins near the rocks at the beach's eastern end.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend a few hours to half a day here – enough time for a swim, a walk, and a picnic. If you're keen on water sports or have kids, you could easily fill a full day. The beach is also a lovely spot for a relaxed evening after exploring Nelson city or the surrounding wineries.
