Mapua is a charming waterfront village on the Waimea Inlet, just 25 minutes from Nelson. With its vibrant arts scene, excellent cafés, and relaxed atmosphere, it's a perfect spot to unwind and soak up the creative energy of the Tasman region. The old apple-packing sheds have been transformed into galleries and studios, and the wharf buzzes with locals and visitors enjoying fresh seafood and stunning estuary views.
Highlights & What to See
- Mapua Wharf – The heart of the village, lined with cafés, galleries, and a popular weekend market. Don't miss the famous smoked fish from the Smokehouse.
- Rabbit Island – A short drive or cycle across the bridge, this long sandy beach is perfect for swimming, picnicking, and walking among the pines.
- Arts & Crafts Studios – Explore the converted apple sheds housing local artists, glassblowers, and potters – you can watch them at work and buy unique souvenirs.
- Mapua Waterfront Walkway – A gentle 2 km loop along the estuary, ideal for birdwatching and sunset strolls.
